A young woman takes a selfie for her boyfriend. When she reviews the photo before sending it, she notices something strange in the background.
Selfie from Hell was well made for an indie film. Its minimalism makes it scary. Simultaneously, the film leaves me wanting to know more.
Why did the young woman encounter the entity? Perhaps the figure is similar to Sadako from the Ringu series, or to Bughuul from the Sinister series. Since the indie film is all about selfies, maybe that's how it found her. Perhaps earlier in the day, one of her friends sent her a selfie with the entity in the background. If you see the entity, even on accident, you could be marked as its next victim.
On the other hand, the indie film never showed the young woman looking at any selfies that taken by other people, so perhaps a nefarious selfie didn't send the entity after her. The entity might have chosen her for the sake of simplicity: It was in the neighborhood--so to speak--when it found the young woman in its search for its next victim. Perhaps, the entity is invisible to the human eye, but it can't hide from technology. There are various kinds of technology one can use to document paranormal phenomena.
I'm leaning more towards the scenario involving the entity finding the woman on its own instead of getting sent to her through a jinxed selfie. However, since the filmmakers don't specifically show how the entity entered the house, it could be either one of those scenarios, or something else entirely I haven't even considered yet.
The filmmakers and actors did a great job advancing the plot while using very little dialogue. The only dialogue was the woman saying okay and bye before she hung up the phone.
One thing I realized while watching Selfie from Hell is how glad I am I don't take selfies.
