Synopsis
Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) and her little brother Martin (Gabriel Bateman) are being stalked by a shadowy female figure (Alicia Vela-Bailey). The figure only appears when the lights are turned off.
The entity may be connected to Diana (Ariel Dupin), a childhood friend of Rebecca and Martin's mother, Sophie (Maria Bello). Diana died in childhood after experimental medical treatments failed to help her.
Eric Heisserer wrote the screenplay for the feature film version of Lights Out. David F. Sandberg wrote the short film, also called Lights Out. David directed both versions of the film. Lotta Losten will appear as Esther.
Lights Out will be released in the United States on July 22, 2016.
My Thoughts
Why is Diana haunting Sophie's family? Sophie could have been responsible for Diana's illness. If she wasn't directly responsible for Diana's illness, perhaps Diana blames her for it even though it was beyond Sophie's control. Diana could be jealous of Sophie. Sophie got to grow-up, but Diana never did. If Diana never got a chance to have a full life, but Sophie did, Diana could be jealous and want to punish her for it. She could want to destroy Sophie's life to show her how it feels to lose everything one has.
There was one scene in the trailer that made it look like Sophie was talking to someone who wasn't there. It could have been Diana. That begs the question: If Sophie is talking to Diana's ghost, how much does she know? It's possible Diana is keeping her plans of revenge from Sophie. The ghost might be trying to gain the woman's trust in order to make it easier to enact her plans.
I'm looking forward to seeing how the original version of Lights Out will translate to a feature length film. I enjoyed the original version of the movie.
